Reliving the Passion for History

When you ask a graduating high school student to choose between History and Engineering related courses, they would probably choose the latter. Try to ask the parents of this student and you will get the same answer. The parents will most likely prefer an Engineering/Natural Science/Health related course for their children rather than liberal arts or social science courses like journalism and history, respectively. The point is, the demand for these courses is decreasing ever since the modern technology arose or perhaps when consciousness to health became the trend. Practicality is the main reason, I guess. If you are the type of person who does not value passion that much, and being practical is your principle, you won't go on choosing fine arts over nursing when you know after graduation a work abroad awaits you, will you? No, you won't. I'm sure.

This post is actually a tribute to my History teacher in high school. Back then, I appreciated this subject more than the other subjects during high school years. But for whatever reason, I must confess that the level of appreciation decreased. Probably because of my course - Engineering, that is. It is indeed too technical and sometimes I think that it is not anymore practical. I even came to the point of getting bored. I got uninspired. Thanks God, I didn't quit. I am now on the process of loving my course.

Oh no...I think I am turning aside from the main subject of this post.

Anyway, just want to tell you people that this is a call - a call for giving justice to History, the subject itself. It's enough that you haven't chosen it over the course you are taking up now. If you don't like it..that's fine. But you don't go on giving wrong definition of what the subject is. I am now hating people in the university who keep on inflicting that history is nothing more than a boring field of study, not-so-recommendable subject, and whatnot. But in fact...It isn't about reading a one or two-inch thick reading materials. It's more than memorizing a bunch of terminologies. And it is more than a study of events in the past...

I am not able to give you the right definition of history so I am giving you the link to the blog of my high school teacher. She really can tell you what history is...

The only reason why I hated history in high school is because our teacher made us summarize the entire world history book.

Leoj @ July 12, 2008 at 3:45 PM

History makes us what we are today. It doesn't make sense that we don't want to learn anything about it.

Anonymous @ July 12, 2008 at 11:28 PM

Dropping by...anyways, History was among one of my best subjects in High School. I did very well in the subject too but ultimately I dropped the subject while registering with the Ministry for the major examination as I found that I had started devoting most of my time onto the Science-based subjects & Mathematics. It cannot be helped, as the university doesn't give a damn whether you get an 'A' for History because nowhere in their entry requirements are stated that History is taken into account. So, typically being a student, at least for those aiming to qualify for the private universities will realize that getting good grade for History does not help 'boost' your application. The universities ONLY stress on Sciences and Mathematics subjects.

Overall, to me, History is a wonderful subject as long it is not laced with politics which unfortunately. I enjoy studying History but at the end of the day, it ultimately boils down to your educational path.

i give respect to history as much as i give respect to all the engineering subjects.

magaling talaga ang mga historian.

anong course mo pala?

zherwin @ July 14, 2008 at 9:33 AM

history is an interesting subject, it broadens your understanding about how the world is evolving, pati na rin mga tao.

i also love love love history, and it's just so sad to think people don't see the beauty in it

I also like history back when I was in highschool bec, of my teacher then...He was actually killed during the snap election during the Marcos regime...I didn't know that he was involved in some kind of a fight against dictatorship but I did admire the way he taught history to us...I never felt that he encourage us to become rebellious or whatever...I just liked him because of his sincerity and his objectivity in presenting ideas to us...

Selerines @ July 17, 2008 at 10:24 AM

Thanks friend.... Ok the reason why many people are not recommending the courses like you said is scope for it in future. Today here in India i am speaking, many are interested in engineering, medicine and so on.. No one is showing interest towards arts like that, just few are showing interest. Parents too are worried about the future of their children's, so they are insisting them to take engineering and so on, irrespective of their interest, that's the sad state here.. Govt. should take some measures to ensure a bright scope for these kind of courses, because day by day technology is changing and everything. So people are changing according to that, this is not wrong, at the same time this is not permanent too.... I hope that things will change in future... Nice post dude.. Keep in touch...

Nursing ako pro ayoko toh hehe Finearts or Conservatory of music trip ko hehe pro ok na rin..hehe

Anonymous @ July 17, 2008 at 11:56 PM

Well first off, by studying history you can study anything for the simple reason that everything has a history: ideas, wars, numbers, races, windsurfing, coal miners, pencils, motherhood and yes, even toilet-training.. hehe
WE was fortunate. we managed to have one excellent history instructor throughout our high school years .. I might not have been an excellent history student, but I do remember having excellent history teachers.. cheers*

Hadassah @ July 19, 2008 at 1:32 PM

it shames me to say that i don't know much about philippine history, but in high school world history and Humanities were my best classes.

i love learning about the past, the wars, revolutions, discoveries, great leaders, the architectures and all that stuff. i think it's all fascinating.

there's only so much you can say about the pop culture, so sometimes i like to steer the conversation from hollywood to the renaissance.

history is fun when you want it to be.

Oman @ July 23, 2008 at 1:55 PM

i agree. the prospect of a better life they say is greater in engineering than in history.

but history is not without its charms specially if one wants to venture in social sciences and laws.

very informative blog. keep it up.

JP @ July 26, 2008 at 10:32 PM

excuse me!

THAT THE UNIVERSITIES ONLY STRESS"..
they are after all part of history..

and, our university is an exception to "those universities".. my HISTORY course kya sa skol!

peace! angal lng! haha...\

Anonymous @ July 30, 2008 at 4:48 PM

i am not a fan of history myself. i hated the subject that much i even slept on one of our sessions.. :-)

pero hindi ibig sabihin nun na binabalewala ko na lng ang history.. nasa tao naman yan.. i am very much aware of the importance of history as i am aware of the importance of my existence..
