Here's a teaser-slash-poster of HILOM -- UP ALCHEMES' entry to Engg week short filmfest.
The story was a collaboration of Bol Lagunday's and my braincells.
Directed and edited by Louie Barcelon.
In behalf of the casts and crew(naks parang totoo ah!) of the film, I would like to thank Ashley Baliong and Bianca Huit for the camera we used, and Ayen Buenaventura for allowing us to shoot --another teaser-- the shower scene in their apartment.
*to all non-Filipino readers of my blogger account, HILOM means "to heal" or some sort*
Why do we have to worry, when in GOD we can find sympathy? Why do we always fear, when GOD controls the steer? why do we have to sheer, when we know the way is clear?
Oh Lord, quicken my shattered soul With you, I know I am whole
Direct me in this trail of life Walk with me in this narrow path Unload me when the road is getting steep Until I found my way out, secure my every leap
Since it's sembreak, I got to find a way to unwind myself after all the strains, if you know what I mean, the last semester brought into me.
I wanted to try skydiving and scuba-diving.
I wanted to travel alone. I wanted to go to Batanes and see its untouched beauty. I wanted to go to Bohol and have a tarsier on my palm.
I wanted to sit on one of the hills of Tanegashima and witness the twilight sky when the sun is visibly in its perfect shape. I'll stay at my very position, wait for the stars to appear and then I'll stargaze.
I wanted to go to Europe. See the midnight sun in Finland for real and spend time in at least one of Sweden's many lakes.
I wanted to go to New Zealand and taste a real fresh milk.
I wanted to buy an SLR camera to have all these photographed.
I wanted to try all these stuff but I wasn't able to since I don't have the moolah. Oh, yeah, money!
So instead of indulging myself the way I wanted to, I just busied myself watching my favorite american series, reading books I promised myself to read during sembreak, and seeing some great movies.
And now I am giving you my top 2 favorites among the movies I have seen during the break.
Here they are:
1. The Shawshank Redemption
This movie was shown more than a decade ago and it's sort of regretful on my part because I have just seen it yesterday. I'm not getting into giving details about the film since you can check it over the web. All I can say is the acting of Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman is superb. The ending is quite surprising too. Watch the movie for you to find out why.lol.
The film was actually based on one of Stephen King's short stories, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. And trivia: it is the highest rating film in imdb. Check it out!
2. I am Sam
This one is soooooo two thumbs up too. The story is very very touching, which made me teary eyed.lol. Sean Penn and Michelle Pfeiffer really deserve their awards for this film. If you watch it, you'll have your eyes glued on the screen because of the comedy-twisted drama. And most of all, the reason why the film was so wonderful is because of the lesson it conveys. Learn it yourself after watching the film.lol.
Is it better to be the lover or the loved one? Neither if your cholesterol is over six hundred. By love, of course, I refer to romantic love- the love between man and woman, rather than between mother and child, or a boy and his dog, or two headwaiters.
The marvelous thing is that when one is in love there is an impulse to sing. This must be resisted at all costs, and care must also be taken to see that the ardent male doesn't "talk" the lyrics of songs. To be loved, certainly, is different from being admired, as one can be admired from afar but to really love someone it is essential to be in the same room with the person, crouching behind the drapes.
To be a really good lover, then, one must be strong and yet tender. How strong? I suppose being able to lift fifty pounds should do it. Bear in mind also that to the lover the loved one is always the most beautiful thing imaginable, even though to a stranger she may be indistinguishable from an order of smelts. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Should the beholder have poor eyesight, he can ask the nearest person which girls look good. (Actually, the prettiest ones are almost always the most boring, and that is why some people feel there is no God.)
"The joys of love are but a moment long," sang the troubadour, "but the pain of love endures forever." This was almost a hit song, but the melody was too close to "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy."
-The Early Essays, Without Feathers

"Hope is the thing with feathers." -Emily Dickinson
Eleven minutes and forty-five seconds had passed. It's almost time but there was no sign that it was about to vanish.
------------
"Ang depression o stress daw naglalast lang for 12 minutes then after that, kung depressed ka pa rin, self-induced na yun"
This statement had become an everyday statement of my friends who regarded last week as their hell week, our hell week, in fact every UP student's hell week.
Everyone was stressed. Sleepless and worse, mentally afflicted. And to make it even worst, depression came together with frustration.
I detest it - the feeling that frustration gives. The feeling of having disappointed expectations and thwarted goals. I hate it when you know in yourself you've done your best and then in the end you'll realize that your efforts weren't enough to attain satisfaction.
I intensely hate it when all your mistakes flash through your mind as if telling you that you could have done better and that your inner ego, your self worth, starts to diminish.
It's a nice thing though. I mean when realization takes over, this could make you a better person, or so somehow. Oh well...
Is this the law of equal trade? The law of conservation? That in order for you to gain something, you should give out an equal value.
The Elric brothers once believed in this so called law of equal trade but changes do happen, especially when all your life you lived in innocence then one day you'll find out that you are ignorant and not innocent. Ergo, they were deceived by the law.
And now, I think I'm experiencing the same.
I am now giving myself a warm welcome to life. It's unfair and not every effort you gave in always has an equal trade. And that's a fact and rather not a law.
------------
Twelve minutes had passed. My time was up but the feeling was still persistent. :(
I totally need to justify not studying last, last week. It's I do this (justify), or I continue being tormented, thinking about it's (i.e. not studying) consequences.
Okay, so I was wrong with the blackhole thing. Wishful thinking sucks.
I'm messing around lately..doing things which don't make sense at all...anyway, I'm not even sure what things do make sense....
I'm not being myself lately...hooked with the things I'm not used to...oh well, cant even tell when I'm being myself...
I'm making this post to mess around because I'm not being myself again...
So to all readers there out.... this is just another inanimate(well, except for the pic which has no connection to this post at all) lousy post from me...
I hope you had enjoyed the read...yeah because it already ends in here....
While I am browsing the multiply site of my laboratory instructor in Analytical Chemistry, I saw this blog about a "conversation" of a Philosophy Professor and his student.
(The conversation is a conversation between atheist and theist. A battle between faith and science -- constituting the distinction between finite and infinite, thus, defining what is a God or who is God...)
But let me just clarify: I made this post to let you know people that I am a "believer"(and I'm proud of it)...and not to stir your emotion up and awaken the spirit of "debate"...This is my blog anyway. LOL!
An opinion or two, however, about the post, or the conversation, will be entertained with a great hospitality possible, as long as the opinion is a mere opinion and does not make an evident alteration to its denotation.
So here it is:
An Atheist Professor of Philosophy speaks to his Class on the Problem Science has with GOD, the ALMIGHTY.
He asks one of his New Christian Students to stand and . . .
Professor : You are a Christian, aren't you, son ?
Student : Yes, sir.
Professor : So you Believe in GOD ?
Student : Absolutely, sir.
Professor : Is GOD Good ?
Student : Sure.
Professor : Is GOD ALL - POWERFUL ?
Student : Yes.
Professor : My Brother died of Cancer even though he Prayed to GOD to Heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But GOD didn't.
How is this GOD good then? Hmm?
( Student is silent )
Professor : You can't answer, can you ? Let's start again, Young Fella.
Is GOD Good?
Student : Yes.
Professor : Is Satan good ?
Student : No.
Professor : Where does Satan come from ?
Student : From . . . GOD . . .
Professor : That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this World?
Student : Yes.
Professor : Evil is everywhere, isn't it ? And GOD did make everything. Correct?
Student : Yes.
Professor : So who created evil ?
(Student does not answer)
Professor : Is there Sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the World, don't they?
Student : Yes, sir.
Professor : So, who Created them ?
( Student has no answer )
Professor : Science says you have 5 Senses you use to Identify and Observe the World around you. Tell me, son . . . Have you ever Seen GOD?
Student : No, sir.
Professor : Tell us if you have ever Heard your GOD?
Student : No , sir.
Professor : Have you ever Felt your GOD, Tasted your GOD, Smelt your GOD? Have you ever had any Sensory Perception of GOD for that matter?
Student : No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.
Professor : Yet you still Believe in HIM?
Student : Yes.
Professor : According to Empirical, Testable, Demonstrable Protocol, Science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student : Nothing. I only have my Faith.
Professor : Yes, Faith. And that is the Problem Science has.
Student : Professor, is there such a thing as Heat?
Professor : Yes.
Student : And is there such a thing as Cold?
Professor : Yes.
Student : No sir. There isn't.
( The Lecture Theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events )
Student : Sir, you can have Lots of Heat, even More Heat, Superheat, Mega Heat, White Heat, a Little Heat or No Heat...
But we don't have anything called Cold. We can hit 458 Degrees below Zero which is No Heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as Cold. Cold is only a Word we use to describe the Absence of Heat.
We cannot Measure Cold.
Heat is Energy.
Cold is Not the Opposite of Heat, sir, just the Absence of it.
( There is Pin - Drop Silence in the Lecture Theatre )
Student : What about Darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as Darkness?
Professor : Yes. What is Night if there isn't Darkness?
Student : You're wrong again, sir.
Darkness is the Absence of Something
You can have Low Light, Normal Light, Bright Light, Flashing Light . . .
But if you have No Light constantly, you have nothing and its called
Darkness, isn't it? In reality, Darkness isn't.
If it is, were you would be able to make Darkness Darker, wouldn't you?
Professor : So what is the point you are making, Young Man ?
Student : Sir, my point is your Philosophical Premise is flawed.
Professor : Flawed ? Can you explain how?
Student : Sir, you are working on the Premise of Duality.
You argue there is Life and then there is Death,
a Good GOD and a Bad GOD.
You are viewing the Concept of GOD as something finite,
something we can measure.
Sir, Science can't even explain a Thought.
It uses Electricity and Magnetism, but has never seen,
much less fully understood either one.
To view Death as the Opposite of Life is to be ignorant of the fact that
Death cannot exist as a Substantive Thing.
Death is Not the Opposite of Life: just the Absence of it.
Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your Students that they evolved from a Monkey?
Professor : If you are referring to the Natural Evolutionary Process, yes, of course, I do.
Student : Have you ever observed Evolution with your own eyes, sir?
( The Professor shakes his head with a Smile, beginning to realize where the Argument is going )
Student : Since no one has ever observed the Process of Evolution at work and
Cannot even prove that this Process is an On - Going Endeavor,
Are you not teaching your Opinion, sir?
Are you not a Scientist but a Preacher?
( The Class is in Uproar )
Student : Is there anyone in the Class who has ever seen the Professor's Brain?
( The Class breaks out into Laughter )
Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's Brain, Felt it, touched or Smelt it? . . .
No one appears to have done so.
So, according to the Established Rules of Empirical, Stable,
Demonstrable Protocol, Science says that you have No Brain, sir.
With all due respect, sir, how do we then Trust your Lectures, sir?
(The Room is Silent. The Professor stares at the Student, his face unfathomable. )
Professor : I guess you'll have to take them on Faith, son.
Student : That is it sir . . .
The Link between Man & GOD is FAITH.
That is all that Keeps Things Moving & Alive.
It turned out later that the student is Albert Einstein.
Music has never been my passion...but listening to this "particular kind of music" has become my escape whenever I am depressed, upset, overpowered by somber stuff, or whenever I am under pressure and compelling tasks start to act upon me and destroy my very state of equilibrium.
So without further fuss...this music I am referring to is...classical music genre.
While studying Engineering Science, I am listening over and over again to three various version of canon: Canon in D major of Pachelbel, Canon in D performed by Vienna Boys Choir, and Canon in Piano. Here are sample vids:
Piano Version(I uploaded two piano versions to give you a chance to judge which one is better)
This one is performed by Vienna Boys Choir. I don't know, but this version made me focused -- a great motivation indeed! Their angelic innocent voice...I just so love it.
I hope this version, a peaceful and soothing one, can help you feel relaxed and at least slacken off a bit your busy day...
When you ask a graduating high school student to choose between History and Engineering related courses, they would probably choose the latter. Try to ask the parents of this student and you will get the same answer. The parents will most likely prefer an Engineering/Natural Science/Health related course for their children rather than liberal arts or social science courses like journalism and history, respectively. The point is, the demand for these courses is decreasing ever since the modern technology arose or perhaps when consciousness to health became the trend. Practicality is the main reason, I guess. If you are the type of person who does not value passion that much, and being practical is your principle, you won't go on choosing fine arts over nursing when you know after graduation a work abroad awaits you, will you? No, you won't. I'm sure.
This post is actually a tribute to my History teacher in high school. Back then, I appreciated this subject more than the other subjects during high school years. But for whatever reason, I must confess that the level of appreciation decreased. Probably because of my course - Engineering, that is. It is indeed too technical and sometimes I think that it is not anymore practical. I even came to the point of getting bored. I got uninspired. Thanks God, I didn't quit. I am now on the process of loving my course.
Oh no...I think I am turning aside from the main subject of this post.
Anyway, just want to tell you people that this is a call - a call for giving justice to History, the subject itself. It's enough that you haven't chosen it over the course you are taking up now. If you don't like it..that's fine. But you don't go on giving wrong definition of what the subject is. I am now hating people in the university who keep on inflicting that history is nothing more than a boring field of study, not-so-recommendable subject, and whatnot. But in fact...It isn't about reading a one or two-inch thick reading materials. It's more than memorizing a bunch of terminologies. And it is more than a study of events in the past...
I am not able to give you the right definition of history so I am giving you the link to the blog of my high school teacher. She really can tell you what history is...
Just wanna share my experience last Friday in the concert organized by FOPC for freshmen at Bahay ng Alumni in UPDiliman. I was assigned in the registration to assist the freshmen who will watch the concert. We do all the stamping, and constant reminding of what to do before one can enter the said venue. Also people tend to inquire us all the questions about the concert(although we're supposed to answer inquiries regarding registration only) that's why sometimes we get stunned and cumbered if we do not know what to respond to someone who has an inquiry that is not related to registration stuff. It was so stressful and yet we still have an urge to laugh out loud whenever someone is joking. I am with my orgmates that's why I don't get bored and dead air barely happens.
But wait, there's more...the most interesting part of the event aside from watching the concert for free is to see all the bands at the backstage. We have an opportunity to ask for an autograph and we are able to take some pictures with them. Wahahaha. Here are some of the photos taken by Javi:
Kean of Callalily and me...
Miguel of Pedicab with Ayen, Javi and Brilly and me...
Ney of 6cyclemind with John, Gilbert, Javi and Ayen
Yesterday is the opening of the 71th season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines(UAAP) and I watched it live at the Big Dome.
But hey! What's with the photo of the oblation statue, you're maybe asking. Pardon me but I really can't find a good analogy between this oblation statue and my decision to watch the opening of UAAP season 71. I posted it here nevertheless. But wait, let me try to build some connections first:
Let me start with this - University of the Philippines is the host of UAAP this year. So instead of the logo of the university, I chose to put the picture of the oblation statue to add some drama in this entry. And besides, this one is the trademark of UP. Being a UP student, I must support the event, the truth is...I am required to watch the opening although I don't want to. But there's no regret since I've seen a well-prepared, two-thumbs-up opening number.
Unfortunately, watching the event means I have to allot some time for this. And this "time" should have been spent in studying my lesson since I have an exam on Monday. And What am I doing now? Blogging!
Anyway, forgive me for this bad analogy: oblation is synonymous to sacrifice. And being in the opening yesterday, it meant that I have sacrificed my time to study for the exam.
I know I'm not supposed to use oblation in this context but I have to end this post now. It's already late and I can't further think of a good analogy of the photo and my decision to watch the event
Yesterday I received a death threat. Well, not really a death threat, just a threat. Also, by "I", I meant Rachel (my sort of best bud in ALCHEMES), who received it through text from an anonymous sender. It goes like this:
"hoy sbhn mo dyn s mara n yn n wg nya kng tntguan kng ayaw nyng mdmay lhat kauspn nya ko hndi ung pra ung pusa n ngttgo. F u a"
What the hell?! Bloody idiot even disregards his/ her vowels! Point is, if any one of you guys knows who the owner of this number- 09099793466- is, please do tell me.
Bloody idiot ruined my nerves. I could not go anywhere in UP without a companion for fear of having muriatic acid splashed on my face. My first instinct when I read this message told me to immediately tell the biggest, most bodyguard-looking close friend in the vicinity, who was Ralph Villa.*
I suspect he began to speculate what secret life I must be living to warrant such threat. He kept asking me what have I done or whom have I offended. I assured him that I am a Catholic high school graduate and had been consistently receiving unbelievably high GMRC marks. That I had never been on the receiving end of a serious "fuck you" message, except from him- Ralph. And that "fuck you" from Ralph, if I remember correctly, was said in an endearing manner as a reply to my coquettish greeting to him.
Arman overheard our conversation and told me not to take such message seriously. Jeff Tsai told a death threat-related joke. I did not get it. I laughed. Ralph told me it could be a plot to prevent me from concentrating on studying for my ES13 exam on Monday. I semi-agreed. Rachel and I began to formulate other theories, one of them quite hilarious, and therefore unlikely.
My nerves were horribly shattered. I pretended not to give a damn all through ChE's 134 and 122. I failed miserably, Jeff and Rachel (seatmates) could sense my paranoia. It was stupid to be paranoid since the sender might have intended it to be a joke.
ChE 134 that day was horrible. I could not digest a single lesson, which was quite common as I believe nobody else fully understood the lecture. Our group's proposal for the design-design thing had been turned down. Again. It is possible that we remain the only proposal-less group.
ChE 122 that day was equally horrible. I was possibly marked "absent". In a cruel twist of fate, my group was called to recite during the thirty seconds I left the room for a biological break.
Ay, ayay! I have a threat and I'm stunned.
I am scared that I might have unknowingly and unintentionally offended someone. It disturbs me because when I offend someone, I want it known and intentional.
I am not hiding from anyone, by the way.

The better person in me, let's call her "Bel", told me I should just focus on positive energy. Thinking negative attracts negative events. I don't know how the creators of that dvd documentary "The Secret" came up with this logic, I suppose they said it to spite the (scientific) Law of Attraction.**
I walked home in the rain that night. I did it for that dramatic effect so that when people see me they'd think I must be a hopeless romantic! Also, it was Friday, so in case I get sick- I'll have two days of recovery.***
I began counting things I'm grateful for...like I retained about 60% of what I learned in Chem 153 and other stuff. Then, as I was emanating positive energy, I stepped on a puddle of rainwater and piss. Great. I could tell it had piss, dog's or man's, I can't really care. I thought happy thoughts...
I got an advance happy birthday gift from Ervin- a dvd of the two Futurama movies. So what if every conversation I ever had with him turned out to be bloodletting activities? He still burned a dvd for me, which was a very kind thing to do.
I reached home, reeking of piss. Our dvd player won't play the dvd.
* My second instinct told me to tell everyone else of this "threat".
** My dear friend Cubsie lent me a dvd of "The Secret". Basically, it is about this mystic Law of Attraction- positive attracts positive. When you want something or someone, you just have to think you or you'll have it, and voila! It will come to you.
Cubsie lent me this dvd with the intention to help me improve my "affair", so that, in his words "para hindi ka na mahirapang i-seduce si ano!". Cubsie, you're the best!
I employ this mystic Law of Attraction tactic and I fear I already border on disillusionment.
*** I now realized that people must have thought me an idiot for walking in the rain, all while holding a wet folded umbrella.
I first heard about this on 2004, during the presidential elections. I came home from school to my Nanay's "alam mo bang may kotseng tumatakbo sa tubig?!".
She saw Mr. Daniel Dingel's invention on UNTV's Kakampi Mo Ang Batas kasagsagan ng 2004 elections. Perhaps to get people- (presidential) candidates- to notice. Ang mga tungaw, walang time i-update ang sarili sa Science and Technology. Tapos namatay pa si Raul Roco.
Such a misfortune too that such genius be shown on an obscure tv program. Nasaan na ang malalaking networks?!
Sadly, kulang siya sa suporta. And you can go search the web for conspiracies surrounding the supposed- no, OBVIOUS- suppression of the invention's development.
Yep, this is old stuff, but I think it's about time for it to be hyped- or rehyped.
--- This is one of the things I am passionate about, hopefully people would notice. I can only create hype for Mr. Dingel. It is up to my readers to do the deep thinking part.
I could write a longer essay, but people nowadays don't have time to read.
It's raining outside and I feel like updating this blog(at last!)...
Aside from being unmotivated to write about stuff like what happened to me one or two days ago that deserves to be noted here in this blog, review for the music I have heard that gave me a last song syndrome, things that made me sad last week such as failing in a quiz or giving a wrong answer to my professor's question, or the simple sharing of some interesting information, if there is any, about myself, I don't find enough and wise reasons why I subdued myself into the world of blogging. But here I am, making this post, proving that sometimes one can get an inspiration just by pondering some somber thoughts...
I am a new blogger and it's obvious - with just four entries since May and very few visitors. Nothing special about this blog, really. But who the heck cares? Every blogger experienced this. I mean they all went through this point - no reader(s), no visitors as if no one gets interested in their site. They didn't have an instantaneous traffic to their site just after creating a post or two, right?
So here I am, hoping that along the way, as I continue to write entries and make updates in this site, perhaps I can find a good reason why I am here, blogging. Who knows? :) And as for the traffic, I don't care much about it, really. I want it though. But the most important for me...is to express myself. That's all, really!
Mass is not always conserved. The 2nd law of thermodynamics disproves the evolution theory. Inevitable is heat loss. Engineering can be an art. What else can I say? Uhm, I am learning chemical engineering at Peyups.
That was how I have seen myself a year ago. I am looking at a different perspective now.
